That’s the correct form we use to indicate a large quantity of an item is kept aside. Whenever you refer to your secret back stock of items you love, use the word “Stash”. Was “Stache” an acceptable form back then? Or were those words so uncommon that it didn’t matter which form was used? It’s hard to tell, but it’s always fascinating to see how language evolves over the years. Both words were rarely used, but even then they seem to be constantly changing places in what would be the top spot of the graph. The second thing is that all the way to the 1960s, “Stash” and “Stache” almost seem interchangeable. The incorrect form should always be avoided.
